DR NICI LONG

Consultant Counselling Psychologist

I am a Psychologist, having obtained a BA (Hons) degree in Health and Community Studies, and an MSc in Psychological Studies and a Doctorate in Counselling Psychology.  My clinical practice is underpinned by 6 years doctoral training in both clinical and counselling psychology and clinical experience which began with CTC Psychological Services in 1993.  I am currently engaged in the study of somatic psychology and body-oriented approaches in  a further Masters Degree.

As an Integrative Psychologist I draw upon a breadth and depth of training which began 30 years ago as a nurse on psychiatric wards at The Royal Free Hospital, London.

I am involved in conducting risk, parenting and general psychological assessments on a diverse client base, as well as providing therapeutic intervention with children, young people, adults and families.  My clinical role includes comprehensive psychometric assessment and clinical assessment, and involves multi-agency referrals and working in close association with professional agencies.

I have a particular interest in the use of creative and symbolic processes, including working with metaphor and story, and body-oriented approaches.  I use a holistic approach in my work with children, young people, adults and families.  These techniques also add value to organisations  and teams where they can be used to meet a variety of staff support, consultancy, supervision and training needs.

I have formulated creative approaches utilising stroytelling, relaxation and visualisation combined with expressive media such as art, storywriting and movement to work on the emotional issues facing children in contemporary social contexts.  This approach is highly relevant to Personal Social & Health Economic Education (PSHE) and Social Emotional Aspects of Learning (SEAL).

"Nici worked with a number of pupils at the PRU who had been through emotionally traumatic experiences. Her calm, nurturing and positively focused approach allowed them the space for reflection that they needed, and provided staff with valuable support to help get their education back on track.

Nici also supported staff in looking for positive strategies to engage pupils and better understand their needs. Pupils valued Nici's persistence and reliability and built up trust in her relationship with them, which for many of our pupils is the first step in getting back some control over their lives."
